Securely distribute sensitive information anywhere, anytime, on any device? That’s Stellar
One of the questions I’m often asked is “where does Stellar Library fit in the scheme of things?”
People often remind me that we already have Dropbox, Google Drive and One Drive, so why do we need Stellar?
Let’s be very clear — we live in the age of the cloud and the online storage services listed above have added a huge amount of functionality to file storage regarding access and security for individuals and business.
But, unlike Stellar, they are NOT document distribution and management systems.
When my friends and I at the MBA programme at Waikato University began thinking and talking about what ultimately became the Stellar family of products, we had a relatively straightforward objective. We wanted to easily organise, access and share the documents and papers associated with our course among ourselves and make those files available on our mobile devices.
As we developed our ideas and began to look at how we could execute them, this turned into the more focused goal of providing a simple and effective way to distribute e-contents into mobile devices while the publisher or the content owners retain full control of the content ownership and security even after sharing them.
A ‘Stellar’ way to share your sensitive documents
There are three key aspects to this solution which remain at the core of all our Stellar products today:
- Security
- Control
- Ease of use
Again unlike any other cloud storage systems, our focus is distribution and access. Stellar is not a document repository — our files are copies, not the original version — and this provides a level of safety and security much higher than when users are accessing (and changing) original versions.
Documents are easily added to the library with access and sharing rights defined with a couple of clicks by the administrator. Again, unlike cloud systems. They are “pushed” out to users’ mobile devices, providing one-touch access to information, whether it be board papers, sales information, digital documents or sensitive financial information.
This removes the need for complex, directory level access rights assignment and also means users don’t have to wade through complex directory layers to get the information they want to access.
And unlike complex systems such as Sharepoint, there is no IT setup required for Stellar. Administration takes place via a web browser and once a user is set up they just download the App for their mobile device from the relevant App Store (Stellar supports all iOS, Android and Windows devices) and they’re good to go.

We think we’ve succeeded beyond our wildest dreams of achieving our original aim of providing a remarkably easy way to distribute documents to individuals or groups using mobile devices. Also, we’ve retained the goal of providing complete control over documents, even after sharing them, while building a customer-centric file structure.
Importantly, changes are instantly made on all devices, there are no obsolete documents floating around, and all files are encrypted and secure.
Of course, we since added a whole lot more to our product, but I do think it is worthwhile to revisit our origins from time to time.
